About

I don’t like cycling up hills but I do like getting to the top of them and then riding down the other side.  I don’t have a fancy road bike, I’m not particularly fast but I do appreciate the cycling terrain that surrounds Sheffield.

Winter Gardens

I set up this site as I couldn’t find a single place online that covered Sheffield’s best cycling hills.  There are lots of discussions on various forums and websites but I’ve only ever found one other, long since dormant, site that began to list them.

The hills that I cover might not be the headline Peak District hills, they might not be long, particularly steep or even overly challenging.  However, they will all go up and they will all end at a higher point than where they started.

The hills are listed in no particular order and each cycling climb is given various ratings and a description to help you prepare for it.

Length: Fairly obvious this one.

Avg & peak gradients: overall and greatest steepness.

Difficulty: A combination of length, gradient, interest and other road users.  Mostly gradient though.

  • 1/5: Are you sure this is actually a hill?
  • 2/5: Not too tricky.
  • 3/5: You’re going to have to drop down a gear or two.
  • 4/5: A right stinker.
  • 5/5: Maybe you should have taken the car.

Likelihood of encountering unpleasant motor-vehicles:

  • 1/5: You’re probably the biggest hazard around.
  • 2/5: Shouldn’t be too dangerous.
  • 3/5: There’s a possibility of speeding vehicles.
  • 4/5: A good chance of some hairy moments.
  • 5/5: You are going to be abused or close passed by a wazzock in an Audi.
