Suggestions…

It’s going to take time to write up all the hills I’ve ridden around Sheffield. In the meantime, here’s a list of hills I’ll be planning to cycle up and share with you.

Are there any hills that you think I should ride? Add your suggestions in the comments.

  1. Thanks for that. I’ve been down Twentywell Lane lots of times, never up and one day I’ll get over to the Jenkin Hill. You’ll find Hagg Hill and Lodge Lane elsewhere on here though. Both killers.

  2. Couple of steep hills for your list…

Kent Road, Heeley : taken from the nadir where Meers Brook passes underneath to the summit by the play centre.

Gleadless Road, Gleadless : Upper section is pretty steep…

    1. Thanks for those suggestions. I’ve done Kent Road but written about it yet. I’ve not cycled much around Gleadless so thanks for those two tips.

  4. How about Greystones Road. From the chippy at the bottom to the very top where you turn left to go up to High Storrs School.

  5. Try Carwood Road in three sections from the bottom at Brightside Lane to the top at Grimesthorpe Road.

The first section over the hump of the bridge is fairly simple, but the second section from Carlisle Street to Petre street and the third section from Petre Street to Grimesthorpe Road are real stinkers.

  6. Thanks for the tip. I’ve been out that way quite a few times, usually ending up at Jenkin Road, and have passed Carwood Road but never been up it. I’ll have to give it a try next time I’m in that neck of the woods.

  7. ey-up just discovered your site, its a great collection!! if you haven’t already tried it Pea Royd Lane in Stocksbridge is a savage I think the 2018 hill climb was there. im planning ride from Penistone to Winnats Pass and back later in the summer if you fancy it?

    1. Glad you like it. I’ve not had much time to work on it in recent months but Pea Royd Lane is definitely on the list. The little 5% climb up to the bottom of Pea Royd Lane is almost worth its own entry.

    1. I’ve both of those and and noted quite a few on my ‘pending’ map. I’m doing the definitive list of hills route as one of a number of challenges for The Children’s Hospital Charity this summer (justgiving.com/PeteSouthwood).

  8. Great list, thanks!!
I second the vote for Gleadless Road and I’d also add Springfield Road in Millhouses, doesn’t look like much until you round the first bend about halfway up and then it gets steeper as you go up, a nice challenge

  9. I live about 30 minutes from the centre of Sheffield (by bike), and a lot of my rides involve cycling into Sheffield and doing a couple of hills whilst I’m there. Some of which, have been found due to your website, so thanks for that!

I usually ride on my own, but I wouldn’t mind having someone to ride around with now and again, to tackle some hills together. A bit of extra motivation to keep the fitness up over the winter months. Let me know if you ever fancy it. My email has been provided.

  10. Would the Ranmoor Gennel possible on a gravel bike with 32mm tyres on? Or does it require a mountain bike with big thick tyres, due to the leafy and slippy surface

    1. To be honest, I’ve no idea! The incline is the hardest aspect so just ensuring you’ve got low enough gearing and a good sense of balance as you can’t wiggle up the path. The path is always covered in leaves though, no matter what the season. They might be a bit drier in the summer though.

  11. A couple of ways to get up to the top of Brincliffe Edge:
Brincliffe Edge Road, steady but longer than you expect keeps on going, bad for traffic at busy times though: https://osm.org/go/eu3_BEA9H– – You could either come all the way from the bottom where it’s Sanford Grove Road or start at…
Archer Lane – very short but pretty steep https://osm.org/go/eu3_BIANo–

Up the other side of the edge you have Union Road, Oak Hill Road and Nether Edge Road which just go straight up the side. All sprints more than drags but relatively steep.

  12. I could not agree more about Hagg Hill, I used to live in Crosspool. I once came back from Malin Bridge that way with a cassette player on my rear carrier. As I went up, my front wheel left the ground several times when my right foot came down hard. That’s never happened to me anywhere else. I was fresh so I did not need to stop, but I did *stare*!

Holme Moss is a bit far afield, but I used to ride out there from Sheffield. It’s the highest road in Derbyshire and one in eight for two thirds of a mile. The highest, not the steepest, but you have to take on Snake Pass (easy from the east) or the Woodhead (also easy from the east) to get there, and they sap you a bit before you can begin. Coming down you will be shaken to pieces by the bad road surface if it is still anything like it was in the 1980s. I recommend Snake Pass out, then Holme Moss, then up the Woodhead to get home; Snake Pass from the west is awful when you’re tired.

I had too much sense to ever go up Winnat’s Pass. One wobble and you’re going to be eaten by a car. Too risky with too much traffic. Maybe in the evening sometime …

Surprise View was my nemesis. It is nowhere near as tough as many other hills but I had generally done 70 or 80 miles by the time I reached Hathersage and had to climb it to get home to Broomhill. Not being able to see the top is the worst bit. I used to take the A57 into Crosspool to avoid Surprise View. it’s a lot higher, but you can see the top.

For real monsters go south to Stanton-in-the-Peak. The approach roads are one in four. I took one look at the main street through it (from the bottom) and went back down; it’s a lot steeper than the approach roads.

    1. Thanks for the message. I hate Holme Moss though but that might also have something to do with my brakes not working properly on the way down in the hail but it’s not as bad as Snake Pass which is just full of arseholes in motor vehicles. It was lovely during the landslip closure and the car free descent into Glossop is still one my my favourites of all time but it’ll never happen again. Winnat’s Pass is a stinker but doable (I think I finally got up on my fifth attempt) but I find that most of the drivers are usually Ok with you, mainly because their cars are having as much trouble getting up too.
As for Surprise View, avoid it like the plague, we went up it the other day and I remembered why it was so horrible. All the drivers are bastards. Better to do Fiddler’s Elbow (longer but much quieter) or The Dale (quieter but much steeper). Both both much nicer than the A57 up to Crosspool, especially the winding bit from down at the reservoirs with frustrated motorists unable to pass you safely (not that that stops them doing so).

Not been to Stanton-in-the-Peak before but did do a big ride around Matlock this summer and there are some fun challenges over there.

      1. Good grief, Holme Moss with bad braking conditions is a terrible thought.

At the bottom of Holme Moss I turned west up the Woodhead, was hailed on all the way up and rained on all the way down, so much that the road was awash and my tyres were submerged half way to the rims. The sun came out at Middlewood and apart from my socks, I was dry by the time I reached Broomhill!

You have my admiration for getting up Winnat’s Pass. I used to go up the former main road and carefully get past the bit where only 18 inches of roadway remain! Same height to climb, much easier gradient and no traffic.

My pipe dream was to ride every road in Derbyshire (OS 1:60000, yellow or better). I did at least three quarters, got an injury, got married, and never finished the job, but got incredibly fit in the course of trying!
